Larne 8 Knockbreda 0 11 Feb, 2018

Peter Wilson reports from Inver Park

Larne thrashed Knockbreda 8-0 at home to go nine consecutive league games - and 11 matches altogether - unbeaten.

The Inver Men struggled in the first half against a determined away side, the half-time score being 1-0. In the second half, the home side ran riot against ‘Breda, putting seven more goals past them with David McDaid scoring four on a day when the end result was never in doubt.

Larne didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard with Thomas Stewart heading in past Jason Craughwell on six minutes having received a cross on the left-wing from Martin Donnelly. Seven minutes later, Kevin Bradley crossed from the right to Jerry Thompson, whose effort went wide.

On 20 minutes, after a back pass from his teammate, Ryan Newberry’s shot just inside the box sailed safely into the hands of Conor Devlin.

Five minutes from the break, Breda’s William McBurney came closest for the visitors from a corner, with his initial shot being blocked by a defender and his second effort going well wide.

The Invermen’s lead was doubled with 50 minutes gone when Stewart slotted home, courtesy of a deflection.

The home side extended their advantage with 53 minutes gone when, to the sheer delight of the home fans, McDaid placed the ball into the bottom corner, having received Stewart’s low cross inside the 18 yard box.

In an outstanding goalkeeping display, on 57 minutes, Devlin saved Newberry’s attempt with his outstretched arm.

Three became 4-0 just after the hour mark when Scullion scored by rounding the keeper and slotting the ball in at a tight angle.

With 72 minutes gone, substitute Caolan Loughran’s low shot was just wide of the left post. Only seconds later, in-form McDaid claimed his hat-trick, calmly lifting the ball over the goalkeeper, having raced clear of the defenders.

The visitors almost pulled one back when, with just over a quarter of an hour to go, substitute Brennan Bennett’s close range effort went narrowly past the post.

The Inver Men weren’t done yet though. With just three minutes left David McDaid smacked the ball past the ‘Breda keeper after getting on the end of Loughran’s cross from inside the area whilst Paul Finnegan scored his first goal for Larne, bundling his header into the goal after connecting with the ball from a Donnelly corner.

Larne’s next fixture is now at to Limavady United on Saturday 17th February. Kick-off at Inver Park is 3pm.
