Football News: AFC Wimbledon Stun Colchester in Dramatic Comeback

In the opening match of the new season, AFC Wimbledon turned around a disastrous start to defeat Colchester 4-2 in a thrilling encounter.

Calamitous Start for Wimbledon

The game got off to a calamitous beginning for Wimbledon, as they found themselves two goals down within the first 10 minutes. Just 60 seconds into the match, a deep cross from Jack Payne found Ben Goodliffe unmarked, and the defender was able to head past goalkeeper Owen Goodman.

The duo combined again seven minutes later, with Payne’s delivery into the area being met by Goodliffe to double Colchester’s advantage.

Wimbledon’s Remarkable Comeback

However, Wimbledon fought back, and James Ball’s deflected shot off Omar Bugiel’s drive pulled one goal back for the hosts. The leveler came just before the half-hour mark, as Jake Reeves curled his effort from the edge of the box to make it 2-2.

“The first-half turnaround was completed in the 37th minute, when Matty Stevens slotted home a penalty after John Kymani-Gordon handled the ball in the area.”

Bugiel Seals the Victory

Bugiel added Wimbledon’s fourth goal eight minutes into the second half, moments after Alistair Smith had hit the bar for Colchester. Goodliffe’s promising afternoon came to an end after the goal, as his attempt to clear the ball resulted in an injury.

Colchester showed more energy in the latter stages, but the south London side held on to secure a dramatic victory on the opening day of the new season.
