Tottenham Manager Ange Postecoglou Shares Advice for England Ahead of Final Euro 2024 Group Game

As Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou continues his role as a pundit for ITV’s coverage of the Euro 2024 tournament, he has provided some valuable insights and advice for Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

With England sitting atop Group C after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Denmark on Thursday, Postecoglou believes the Three Lions cannot afford to coast on their previous tournament experiences, where four points were often enough to progress.

“I think the key is that you’ve still got to stay in the present. Just because you had four points in the past and things worked out okay, you still didn’t win, it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen this time. I think they realise that there needs to be some impetus to their tournament now.”

The former Australia national team coach elaborated on what that ‘impetus’ should look like, suggesting England need to find more momentum in their form and confidence going into their final group game against Slovenia on Tuesday.

“[They need] some momentum in terms of form, in terms of players maybe playing with a little more freedom and a little more confidence. I think if you don’t get that at some point in the tournament then it will get away from you.”

With the permutations meaning England could potentially secure progression with a draw, Postecoglou warned the team against complacency, emphasizing the need to approach the match with a strong, positive mentality.

“If you put in a poor performance in a knockout game, there’s no second chance. There’s no chance to readdress that. I think the players will be looking forward to it, I think Gareth will be looking forward to it as well.”

England’s match against Slovenia kicks off on Tuesday evening, the same time as Denmark’s clash with Serbia. A draw would guarantee the Three Lions’ spot in the Euro 2024 knockout phase, while a win would see them top the group.
