Football News Update: Euro 2024, Champions League, FIFA World Cup, Women’s World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations Standings, Premier League, EFL Cup, EFL Championship, EFL One, EFL Two, and FA Cup
More than half a million ticketless fans from across Europe are expected to travel to Germany for the highly anticipated Euro 2024 tournament. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham has called on England supporters to be “a tribute to their country” during the event.
Many of the estimated 500,000 fans will come from the United Kingdom, with England and Scotland both participating in the tournament. Scotland’s national team, led by manager Steve Clarke, will face hosts Germany in the Friday night opener in Munich, while England’s Three Lions will take on Serbia in a “high-risk” Group C fixture in Gelsenkirchen two days later.
Bullingham understands the high-risk classification, but he has faith in the German police’s ability to maintain order. The FA chief executive also confirmed that there will be no special protection for the players’ families at the Veltins Arena during the England-Serbia match.
“Regarding the England supporters, Bullingham admits there is an element of unpredictability, as only small numbers have traveled to the last two World Cups. However, he has called on the fans to get behind the team and represent their country in a positive manner, reminiscing about the England supporters being ‘the fans of the tournament’ at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.”
In other football news, the FA has taken a proactive step to combat online racial abuse of England players during the Euros. The governing body will fund a specialist police officer to investigate and prosecute any perpetrators, ensuring that measures are in place to bring those responsible to justice.
As the football world turns its attention to the upcoming tournaments, including the Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and Women’s World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations standings, Premier League, EFL Cup, EFL Championship, EFL One, EFL Two, and FA Cup, fans can look forward to an exciting and eventful period in the sport.
