Football News: Austria Triumph Over Netherlands, Reach Euro 2024 Knockout Stage as Group D Winners

In a thrilling five-goal encounter in Berlin, Austria edged past the Netherlands to secure top spot in Group D at Euro 2024. Marcel Sabitzer’s late strike proved to be the difference as Ralf Rangnick’s side emerged victorious.

Austria Finish First in Group D

The victory saw Austria finish first in the group, leapfrogging both the Netherlands and France, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Poland in Dortmund. Rangnick’s well-organized and impressive Austria team were twice pegged back, but ultimately had the final say through Sabitzer’s powerful 80th-minute finish.

A Rollercoaster Match

An early own goal by Donyell Malen gave Austria the lead, which was then doubled by Romano Schmid‘s header. However, the Netherlands, led by Ronald Koeman, fought back through goals from Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay, only for Sabitzer to seal the win for Austria.

“We deserved to win in the end. Overall, we had the greater will to win and an extreme energy output on the pitch, which you could feel in every phase of the match,” said Rangnick.

Austria’s Remarkable Journey Continues

The result means Austria, ranked 25th in the world, have reached the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time since the 1982 World Cup. They will now face the runners-up of Group F, currently Turkey, in the last 16.

Koeman, on the other hand, acknowledged that the Netherlands “deserved to lose” and took responsibility for the team’s poor start to the match.

The victory continues Austria’s impressive form under Rangnick, who has now led the nation to back-to-back wins at a major tournament. They will undoubtedly be a dangerous opponent in the knockout round, as they look to continue their remarkable journey at Euro 2024.
