Canada’s Underdog Run in the Copa América
Canada has made an impressive run in the Copa América tournament so far, advancing from the group stage and securing a spot in the quarter-finals.
In their opening game, Jonathan David scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Peru in the 74th minute. Canada then earned a 0-0 draw against Chile, which was enough for them to finish second in the group and progress to the next round.
“Canada’s squad is valued at around 131 million euros, significantly less than the 805 million euros it would take to buy Argentina’s entire roster.”
Despite the stark contrast in squad value, Canada has shown their ability to punch above their weight in international football. Their starting lineup for the quarter-final against Venezuela remains unchanged from the draw with Chile, with key players like Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, and Cyle Larin leading the charge.
Canadian coach Jesse Marsch expressed disappointment in the poor performance of the United States men’s national team, who failed to advance from the group stage.
As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on Canada’s underdog run and their ability to continue their solid defensive performances against the powerhouses of international football.
