Football News: Argentina and Colombia Set for Thrilling Copa America 2024 Final
The stage is set for an intriguing Copa America 2024 final as Argentina and Colombia prepare to battle it out for the prestigious trophy this Sunday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Argentina Aim for Back-to-Back Titles
After their triumphant World Cup victory two years ago, Argentina are now aiming to make it back-to-back Copa America titles. Led by manager Lionel Scaloni, La Albiceleste have been in impressive form throughout the tournament, conceding just a single goal on their way to the final.
Argentina’s leading scorer, Lautaro Martinez, has been in fine form, finding the net four times in five games. The two-time champions will be confident of clinching a record 16th Copa America crown, having won 25 of the 41 previous meetings with their opponents.
Colombia Seek First Title in 23 Years
On the other hand, Colombia will be seeking to end their 23-year wait for a Copa America title. Their last and only triumph in the competition came back in 2001 when they defeated Mexico in the final. Despite not lifting the trophy since then, Los Cafeteros have finished third in two of the last three tournaments, in 2021 and 2016.
Nester Lorenzo’s squad have been impressive in front of goal, scoring 12 times in five games. Jhon Cordoba, Luis Diaz, Jefferson Lerma, and Daniel Munoz have all found the net twice for Colombia, with Lerma’s goal in the semi-final win over Uruguay proving to be the match-winner.
“We are determined to end our drought and bring the Copa America trophy back to Colombia,” said Lerma in a pre-match interview.
However, Colombia will be without the services of Munoz for the final, as the Crystal Palace defender is suspended after being sent off in the semi-final.
