Football News: Euro 2024, Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and More!

The 2024 Copa América is set to kick off on Thursday, with a slightly different look compared to previous editions. However, the familiar stars, including Lionel Messi and Vinicius Jr., will be looking to add to their trophy hauls.

The tournament, which is being held in the United States, will feature six teams from the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf), alongside all 10 South American nations. This is the first time the Copa América is being staged outside of the South American continent.

“The tournament is seen as a preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.”

The United States team, led by manager Gregg Berhalter, is under significant pressure, with some fans calling for his dismissal following a 5-1 warm-up defeat against Colombia. Berhalter, however, remains optimistic about the team’s chances, viewing the Copa América as a “building block” for the squad.

Lionel Messi, the Argentina forward, is aiming for his third consecutive Copa América title, having won the tournament in 2021 and the 2022 World Cup. The 36-year-old, who plays for Inter Miami, could potentially retire from international football after this tournament, as he approaches his 39th birthday during the next World Cup.

The Contenders

  1. Brazil, the 2019 champions, are the second favorites to win the Copa América, as they bid for their 10th title and their fourth this century. Among their key players are Vinicius Jr., Rodrygo, and Endrick, all of whom will be Real Madrid teammates next season.

  2. Vinicius Jr. is the favorite to win the Ballon d’Or this year, following his successful seasons with Real Madrid, winning both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. Jude Bellingham of England is also thought to be in contention for the prestigious award, and a strong performance in the Copa América could be a deciding factor.

  3. Uruguay, managed by Leeds United legend Marcelo Bielsa, will also be a team to watch. The 68-year-old is hoping to finally win the Copa América, having come close in 2004 when he was managing Argentina.

The tournament features four groups of four teams, with the top two from each group advancing to the quarter-finals. The opening match will be between Argentina and Canada in Atlanta on June 20, and the final will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 14.
