Euro 2024: Netherlands and Austria Battle for Last 16 Spot

Netherlands and Austria will both hope to seal their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Euro 2024 when they face off in their Group D finale this week.

The Dutch know only a point is needed to reach the knockout stages, but Ralf Rangnick’s men are still within a chance of topping the group. Ronald Koeman’s side held France to a goalless stalemate last time out, with Xavi Simons having a winner controversially ruled out.

Victory by a better margin than Les Blues’ clash with already-eliminated Poland will help them top a very competitive Group D. However, Austria – likely to go through as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams – can still cause a dramatic upset to leapfrog the Netherlands and France should results go their way.

This Euro 2024 clash will take place on Tuesday, June 25. Kick-off at Olympiastadion Berlin is scheduled for 5pm – with the other game in Group D, France vs Poland, also taking place at the same time.

The talkSPORT network will have live coverage of both matches, with Natalie Sawyer presenting this game on talkSPORT. Commentary comes from Adam Bridge and former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy.

Koeman has his full squad at his disposal, with Ajax striker Brian Brobbey now fully recovered from a hamstring issue. Joey Veerman and Jerdy Schouten are both one booking away from suspension, which could see them rested ahead of the knockouts.

Austria, meanwhile, are sweating over the fitness of Gernot Trauner, who was withdrawn with a muscle issue after scoring against Poland.

Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk leapt to the defence of teammate Memphis Depay following his continued struggles in front of goal. Depay has started each of his country’s first two matches but has failed to find the net and was substituted in both games.

“I am confident that things will get better for him. And if not, then other players will have to stand up. But I believe Memphis is strong and smart enough to make the difference for us,” said Van Dijk.

On his next opponents, Van Dijk added: “Austria is putting a lot of energy into their games with high pressure. But we have qualities in our squad that can punish their playstyle.”
