Football News Update: Denmark FA Fined for Fans’ Obscene Banner at Euro 2024

In a development that has rocked the football world, the Danish Football Association (DFA) has been handed a hefty £7,500 fine by UEFA for a banner displayed by their supporters during the Euro 2024 match against England last Thursday. The banner, which read ‘f* UEFA**’, was lifted by an unknown section of Denmark fans during the 1-1 draw in Group C.

The DFA, however, has made it clear that they will not be the ones footing the bill. According to DFA director Erik Brogger Rasmussen, the association will pay the fine but intends to pass the cost on to the individuals responsible for the offensive banner.

“We will pay the fine, but the most important thing for us is that we identify those who brought the banner in – and then we will pass the bill on to them,” Rasmussen said, as quoted by The Sun. “We hope that those who think of taking a banner with that sort of language on it into a match will think twice when they have to pay for it.”

This is not the first time a national team has been punished for the behavior of its fans at Euro 2024. Earlier in the tournament, Albania and Serbia’s football federations were each fined £8,400 for fans displaying nationalist maps, while Albania’s striker Mirlind Daku was suspended for two games for leading anti-Macedonian chants.

The English FA also faced a £26,000 fine from UEFA during the Euro 2020 semi-final clash with Denmark, due to incidents such as a laser being shone in Kasper Schmeichel’s face, disturbances during the national anthems, and fireworks being set off.

As the tournament progresses, football fans and authorities alike will be closely watching to see how the issue of fan behavior is addressed and disciplined, with the hope of maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for all in the lead-up to the 2024 UEFA European Championship.
