Football News Update: Derby County Clinch Automatic Promotion to the Sky Bet Championship
Derby County have secured automatic promotion to the Sky Bet Championship after a 2-0 victory over Carlisle. This triumph comes two years after the Rams were relegated to the third tier.
The Derby County team only needed a draw at home to secure their promotion, but they got off to a flying start. In the fifth minute, midfielder Max Bird, making his 200th appearance for the club, scored a stunning 25-yard effort to give Derby the lead.
James Collins then doubled Derby’s advantage in the second half, sealing the result and propelling the Rams back to the Championship with a club-record points haul of 92 points.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s how I dreamt about it and how all the lads dreamt about it,” said Derby’s Max Bird after the match. “We stood together during low times and today is probably my best day at the club.”
Conor Hourihane, another Derby player, expressed his delight, saying, “It’s been tough work, every season is, but credit to the lads. They have been absolutely fantastic.”
Derby County manager Paul Warne was proud of his team’s achievement, acknowledging the challenges they faced throughout the season. “Promotion is never easy and this year the lads have been excellent, so I’m really proud,” he said.
Punjabi Rams, the official supporters’ group, celebrated the promotion, stating, “Two years ago, we marched to save our club, and now David Clowes and this brilliant group have saved us and got us back up. Now we need to stabilise and look forward to the future – and get the Rams back-to-back, where they belong, back in the Premier League.”
This promotion marks a significant milestone for Derby County, who have overcome adversity and now look to the future with renewed hope and determination to climb back to the top flight of English football.
