In a massive upset, Belgium’s Euro 2024 campaign got off to a disastrous start with a 1-0 loss against Slovakia on Monday at the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt. Despite Domenico Tedesco’s team dominating the game for much of the time, they were denied on several occasions by a resolute Slovak defense.
Romelu Lukaku was the center of attention, with the striker wasting numerous opportunities to put the ball in the net. Even when Lukaku did manage to score twice, the goals were disallowed by VAR for offside and a handball by Lois Openda.
Jeremy Doku’s promising runs forward were also thwarted, as the young Belgian winger found himself constantly blocked throughout the match. Slovakia took full advantage of Belgium’s profligacy in front of goal, with Ivan Schranz’s shot from Doku’s errant pass proving to be the decisive goal.
In the second half, Belgium were totally dominant, enjoying over 70% possession and registering seven shots, but they simply could not find a way to beat the Slovak goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka, as VAR repeatedly intervened to deny them the equalizer.
“The loss is a significant setback for Belgium’s Euro 2024 aspirations, and they will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their upcoming matches in the tournament.”
