The Ukraine Euro 2024 squad will need to be better than their opening game against Romania, a 3-0 loss, if they’re to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament. More than two years on from the beginning of Russia’s cruel invasion, occupation and extended state of war, Ukraine will participate in an event where football confirms its place as the most important of the least important things in life.

Ukraine managed the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 and since then, they’ve arguably improved in quality. Goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has had an excellent season at Real Madrid, Chelsea’s Mykhailo Mudryk has shown glimpses of quality in a faltering side, and Artem Dovbyk top-scored in La Liga for Girona.
There’s no shame in their qualification performances, either. European champions Italy finished level on points with Ukraine, and solid draws earned against both England and the Azzurri will have Serhiy Rebrov convinced that he’s capable of more this summer. The former Tottenham striker has taken over from his former partner in crime, Andriy Shevchenko, and there’s hope that he can give Ukrainians something to smile at Euro 2024. Belgium and Slovakia await in their final two group games – meaning there’s still a chance of them reaching the next stage of the tournament.
As for the rest of the football world, the Champions League final is just around the corner, with the top teams battling it out for the prestigious trophy. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the 2023 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as well as the 2023 Women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. In Africa, the standings for the Africa Cup of Nations are heating up, with teams vying for a spot in the prestigious tournament.
