Football News: Emre Can Replaces Injured Pavlovic in Germany’s Euro 2024 Squad

In a late twist ahead of the Euro 2024 tournament, Emre Can has been called up to Germany’s national team as a replacement for the injured Aleksandar Pavlovic. The former Liverpool defensive midfielder has been a standout performer for Borussia Dortmund this season, helping the club reach the Champions League final.

Can, who has 43 caps for the German national team, was initially overlooked by manager Julian Nagelsmann but has now been included in the 26-man squad for the competition, which will be held on home soil. Pavlovic, the talented Bayern Munich youngster who made his Germany debut earlier this month, has been ruled out of the tournament due to an infection caused by tonsillitis.

“We want another No.6 in the squad and have therefore decided to nominate Emre Can. He immediately expressed his enthusiasm and willingness to join the team. We wanted to have another player in the squad who has played a lot of games and who knows how to deal with the pressure.”

– Julian Nagelsmann

Can, who last featured for Germany in September 2023, will be looking to make an impact at the Euros, having missed out on the 2018 and 2022 World Cup squads. The 30-year-old could be set to face off against the likes of France’s Kylian Mbappé as Germany open their campaign against Scotland at the Allianz Arena.

The inclusion of Can has been seen as a surprise, with Bayern Munich’s Leon Goretzka missing out on the final squad. Nagelsmann has explained that the decision was made to ensure the team has adequate depth and experience in the defensive midfield position.

With the Euro 2024 tournament just around the corner, German fans will be eager to see how their team’s preparations unfold, with Emre Can’s late call-up adding an intriguing twist to their quest for glory on home soil.
