Football News Update: England Captain Harry Kane Divides Opinions Ahead of Euro 2024 Match Against Slovenia
The ongoing debate over England captain Harry Kane’s performance has intensified, as talkSPORT pundits Gabby Agbonlahor and Darren Ambrose engaged in a heated discussion over the Bayern Munich striker’s role in the national team.
Kane scored in England’s 1-1 draw against Denmark in their second Euro 2024 group game, becoming only the third English player to score at four major tournaments. However, his overall contribution for the remainder of the match was questioned by some, leading to manager Gareth Southgate’s decision to substitute him in the 70th minute for Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins.
“I don’t care what anyone says, you don’t take your best goalscorer off,” Ambrose wrote on X. “Harry Kane is England’s match winner, so you don’t take him off.”
Agbonlahor, however, was not convinced by Ambrose’s stance, questioning whether Kane should play the full 90 minutes in every game. “So Kane plays 90 minutes no matter what every game?” he replied, adding a crying-with-laughter emoji.
Ambrose stood firm, explaining that a chance to score in the final minutes should be given to a player like Kane, who has a better chance of finding the back of the net than any other player in the England squad. Agbonlahor acknowledged the argument but maintained that when Kane is being ineffective, changes should be made to the lineup.
