According to reports, the Football Association has three managers in mind to replace England boss Gareth Southgate after the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.
Southgate’s current contract is set to expire at the end of this year, and he is expected to step down from his role as England manager following this summer’s European Championships. The England team’s disappointing performances in the group stages at Euro 2024 have added to the belief that the time has come for Southgate and the FA to part ways, paving the way for a new leader heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ahead of the Euros, Southgate openly admitted that he may not be staying on as England boss, stating that this could be his “last chance” to win a major tournament with the national team. “If we don’t win [the Euros], I probably won’t be here anymore. Then it might be the last chance,” Southgate said.
Potential Replacements
The report from HITC suggests that England U21 manager Lee Carsley has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Southgate. The 50-year-old Carsley has been in charge of the U21 side since 2021 and guided the team to the European Championship title last year.
The FA is said to be keen on the idea of promoting from within their system, with Southgate himself having followed a similar path from the U21 setup to the senior team. The FA is reportedly impressed with the relationship Carsley and his staff, including Ashley Cole, have forged with several members of the current England squad, which is seen as a significant advantage.
However, Carsley is not the only option being considered by the Wembley bosses. The report also confirms that the FA has maintained an interest in Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe, despite his success at St. James’ Park. While Newcastle would likely resist any approach for Howe, the report suggests that the England job could still be a tempting prospect for the highly-rated coach.
Additionally, the FA is believed to have assessed the credentials of Graham Potter, who has also been considered as a potential successor to Southgate.
