Football News: England Ponder Lineup Changes for Euro 2024 Last-16 Clash Against Slovakia

England Evaluates Options Ahead of Slovakia Clash

England manager Gareth Southgate is considering his options as his team prepares to face Slovakia in the last-16 of Euro 2024 on Sunday. Southgate has faced criticism for his tactics during the group stage, but he is not expected to make drastic changes for the upcoming match.

One notable change could see 19-year-old Kobbie Mainoo replace Conor Gallagher in midfield. Mainoo made a strong impact as a substitute in England’s goalless draw with Slovenia on Tuesday and is likely to be rewarded with his third international start.

Southgate is also evaluating his attack, with Phil Foden’s return to training on Friday after the birth of his third child providing a boost. Foden is expected to start on the left, with Jude Bellingham as the number 10 and Bukayo Saka on the right, supported by captain Harry Kane.

“The manager has struggled to find the right balance in midfield, with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Gallagher failing to establish themselves as the ideal partner for Declan Rice. Southgate will hope that Mainoo can provide more control in possession alongside Rice.”

England have lacked creativity and scoring power, netting only two goals in their three group stage matches against Denmark, Serbia, and Slovenia. There have been calls for Southgate to consider changes, with Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon pushing for starting spots, but the manager seems inclined to stick with his regular starters.

The absence of specialist left-back Luke Shaw has been an issue, with Kieran Trippier deputizing on the left. However, Shaw is back in full training and expected to be on the bench against Slovakia.

As England look to bounce back from their group stage struggles, all eyes will be on Southgate’s lineup and tactics as they aim to secure a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
