Football News Update: England and Manchester City Star Phil Foden Tipped to Shine at Euro 2024
Manchester City defender John Stones has backed his England and club teammate Phil Foden to make a significant impact at the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. Stones believes Foden could even go on to win the Player of the Tournament award.
Foden, 24, is coming off an impressive domestic campaign, having scored 19 goals and provided 8 assists as Manchester City secured an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title. His standout performances saw him named Manchester City’s Player of the Year, the Premier League Player of the Year, and the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.
“Yes, I’m biased, I think he’s absolutely incredible,” Stones said when asked if Foden could be the Player of the Tournament at Euro 2024. “First how he plays the game, so silky playing like he’s in the park.”
Stones praised Foden’s development, highlighting his increased maturity, goal-scoring ability, and pressing game. “This season has been incredible for him and I hope and I’m sure he will bring that to the tournament,” the defender added.
Fellow England International Praises Foden
Fellow England international Kieran Trippier also lavished praise on Foden, describing the young midfielder’s ability as “frightening” in training.
“Everybody sees him on the pitch, but what people don’t see in training is his vision, his technique, and his ability is frightening,” Trippier said.
Concerns Over Foden’s Deployment
However, Sky Sports News reporter Rob Dorsett believes that England have not yet managed to get the best out of Foden, particularly when he has been deployed in the No. 10 role. Dorsett expects Foden to start on the left-wing, with Jude Bellingham playing in the central attacking midfield position.
Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson echoed these sentiments, stating that England need to find solutions to get Foden more involved and on the ball, as he is a “match winner” who can make things happen.
England will begin their Euro 2024 campaign on Saturday, June 16, when they take on Serbia in Gelsenkirchen. They will then face Denmark on Thursday, June 20, in Frankfurt, before concluding their Group C fixtures against Slovenia on Tuesday, June 25.
