England Secure Narrow Victory Over Serbia in Euro 2024 Opener

England have made a winning start to their Euro 2024 campaign, defeating Serbia 1-0 in their opening group stage match at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen. While the result marks only the second time the Three Lions have won their European Championship opener in 11 attempts, the performance was not entirely convincing.

Jude Bellingham was undoubtedly the standout player for England, scoring the decisive goal and leading the team in several key areas on the pitch. Kyle Walker and Bukayo Saka also put in memorable displays, as did tournament debutant Marc Guehi. However, the team’s failure to maintain control of the game after taking the lead was a concern, with Phil Foden’s uncharacteristically sloppy performance being a particular issue.

The Manchester City midfielder, who is usually reliable in possession, repeatedly surrendered the ball to the Serbian side in the second half, allowing them to put pressure on the England defense. Fortunately for Gareth Southgate’s men, the opposition’s finishing was wasteful, particularly from former Premier League striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

“If England are to fulfill their pre-tournament billing as one of the favorites to lift the trophy, they will need to raise their game and learn from the lessons of this narrow victory.”

The Three Lions will be looking to build on this opening win as they continue their journey in the Euro 2024 competition.
