Football News Update: England Secure Victory in Euro 2024 Opener
In their opening match of the Euro 2024 tournament, England earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Serbia. The Three Lions’ defense, led by Kieran Trippier, played a crucial role in securing the result.
Trippier, who normally features at right-back, was selected to start on the left side of the England backline due to limited resources in that position. Despite some late concerns when the Newcastle defender appeared to be injured, manager Gareth Southgate has since reassured fans that Trippier was only suffering from cramp.
“Just a bit of cramp really,” Southgate told talkSPORT after the match, praising Trippier’s “incredible character” in completing the full 90 minutes.
The match-winning goal came in the 13th minute, as Jude Bellingham headed home Bukayo Saka’s cross from the right flank. England’s defense, which also included Marc Guehi, John Stones, and Kyle Walker, successfully protected the lead and helped Jordan Pickford keep a clean sheet.
While Harry Kane had a chance to double England’s advantage late in the second half, his effort was well saved onto the crossbar. Serbia applied pressure in the closing stages, but the Three Lions held firm to secure all three points.
With this victory, England now sit atop Group C in the Euro 2024 standings, following Slovenia and Denmark’s 1-1 draw earlier in the day. The team’s next challenge will be a clash with Denmark on Thursday, which will be broadcast live on talkSPORT. Another win would secure England’s progression to the knockout stage of the tournament.
