In the build-up to the highly anticipated Euro 2024 tournament, it has been revealed that if the EFL Championship were considered an independent nation, it would have the most representatives playing for other countries at the upcoming European Championship.
According to the report, the Premier League, Serie A, the German Bundesliga, La Liga, and Ligue 1 have unsurprisingly provided the most players to other national teams for Euro 2024. However, the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football, is next in line, with 18 players contracted to Championship clubs last season set to represent their respective countries.
This puts the English second division ahead of the big-money Saudi Pro League in terms of international representation. Turkey and the Czech Republic are also more represented at Euro 2024 if home-based international players are included.
Some notable EFL Championship players set to feature at Euro 2024 include Scotland’s Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong (Southampton), Poland’s Jan Bednarek (Southampton), Denmark’s Jannik Vestergaard and Mads Hermansen (Leicester City), Belgium’s Wout Faes (Leicester City), and Turkey’s Yunus Akgun (Leicester City).
The article also highlights the growing presence of EFL Championship players in major international tournaments, with the 2021 edition of the Euros featuring representatives from clubs further down the English football pyramid, such as Barnsley, Bristol Rovers, Charlton Athletic, and Doncaster Rovers.
As the football world turns its attention to the upcoming competitions, including the Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and Women’s World Cup, the EFL Championship’s strong representation at Euro 2024 serves as a testament to the depth and quality of talent within the English second tier.
