Football News: Euro 2024, Champions League, and More

Scotland legend Ally McCoist believes German striker Niclas Fullkrug would be an excellent addition to the Premier League. The Borussia Dortmund frontman is joint-top goalscorer at Euro 2024 despite not starting any of the three group matches.

Fullkrug helped Dortmund reach the Champions League final last season and has impressed with his performances at the ongoing European Championship. The 30-year-old came off the bench to score a stunning goal in the 5-1 victory over Scotland and then equalized with a brilliant header in the 1-1 draw against Switzerland.

While Spain duo Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal have also caught McCoist’s eye, the former striker has particularly enjoyed watching Fullkrug. “Nico Williams has been different class,” McCoist told talkSPORT.com. “But the one I’d like to see is Fullkrug. I have no doubt he would score goals in the top-flight in England. I like him. He’s a proper centre-forward.”

“I probably wouldn’t [start Fullkrug over Havertz],” McCoist added. “But I just think they’ve got a brilliant option with Fullkrug, as we saw. He’s certainly a brilliant option to have.”

Fullkrug has been the subject of interest from Premier League clubs in the past, with West Ham reportedly scouting him recently. However, when he left Werder Bremen for Dortmund in 2023, he said he could have gone to England but didn’t feel the “tingle” to leave Bremen until the Champions League finalists came calling.

Despite Fullkrug’s impressive form, Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann prefers using Arsenal star Kai Havertz as his starting No.9, with Fullkrug as an option off the bench. Havertz only has one goal in the tournament so far, a penalty, but McCoist believes the 25-year-old deserves his place in the starting XI.
