Football News: Euro 2024, Champions League, FIFA World Cup, and More

John Obi Mikel, the former Chelsea midfielder, is hoping that England can end their 58-year wait for a trophy by winning Euro 2024. In an interview with talkSPORT, Mikel shared his thoughts on the upcoming European Championship and the players he believes will make a significant impact.

The European Championship is set to kick off on June 14, with hosts Germany taking on Scotland in Munich. Italy, the reigning champions, will be among the favorites, alongside France, Germany, Spain, and Portugal. England, too, are considered heavy favorites, and Mikel is optimistic about their chances.

“It’s coming home!” Mikel exclaimed when asked who he thinks will win Euro 2024. “That’s what we hear all the time, it’s coming home! My hope is that it comes home this time, I hope England win it, but no doubt about it, there’s strong, strong teams out there in the Euros.”

Mikel acknowledged the depth of talent in the competition, mentioning teams like France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the strong individual players like Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Jude Bellingham. However, he believes the mental aspect will be crucial, as players may be fatigued from a long season.

When asked about the key players for England, Mikel highlighted the importance of Harry Kane, Phil Foden, and Ollie Watkins. He also praised the defensive solidity of John Stones and Kyle Walker, who will need to play a significant role for the Three Lions.

While the European Championship trophy is the ultimate prize, individual accolades are also up for grabs, including the Top Scorer award. Mikel believes Kane and Ronaldo will be in the running, but he’s also excited to see the performances of other stars like Bellingham and Kobbie Mainoo.
