Football News: FAW Prepares for Potential Managerial Changes, Thierry Henry Considered as Candidate
FAW Considering Managerial Candidates
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is preparing for potential managerial changes at the international level, with discussions with several candidates already underway. The association is willing to wait until at least the end of the Euro 2024 finals before making a decision.
Thierry Henry as a Candidate
One of the prominent candidates under consideration is Thierry Henry, the World Cup-winning former French forward. However, Henry would not be available until the conclusion of the Olympics in August, as he is currently serving as the manager of the French Under-23 national team.
“He’s got a job to do with the French Under-23s and he’s the ultimate professional, but he would be a huge addition to the Welsh setup,” said Mike Flynn, the Cheltenham Town manager and a former colleague of Henry’s.
Flynn believes that Henry’s respect for the Welsh coaching badges, as evidenced by his attendance at conferences organized by the FAW, demonstrates his commitment to the association.
“He’s not just a big name, I’ve seen him do the work on the coaching badges, I’ve spoken to him when he’s been at Monaco and since he’s been with France,” Flynn added.
Other Potential Candidates
The appointment of former Canada international Rhian Wilkinson as the manager of Wales’ women’s national side has shown that the FAW is open to looking beyond Wales for its managerial appointments. However, Flynn believes that both Craig Bellamy and Robert Page would also be impressive candidates for the role.
“With [chief executive] Noel Mooney and Dave Adams, it’s in good hands and I know they will try and get the best man they feel can take Wales to the next major tournament,” Flynn concluded.
