Football News Update: Manuel Neuer Sets Major Record in Germany vs Hungary Match
In a momentous occasion for German football, legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has set a new record. During Germany’s match against Hungary on Wednesday afternoon, Neuer became the goalkeeper with the most tournament appearances from a UEFA nation.
When the whistle sounded to start the game, Neuer surpassed Hugo Lloris’ previous record. Neuer has now featured 17 times in the Euros, matching Gianluigi Buffon, and 19 times in the World Cup, bringing his total tournament appearances to an impressive 36.
This remarkable achievement adds to Neuer’s growing list of accolades. He recently became Germany’s most-capped player in a major tournament, overtaking Philipp Lahm. Against Hungary, Neuer also became the country’s fifth-most capped player in history, tying with Bastian Schweinsteiger on 121 appearances.
“This feat is all the more impressive given Neuer’s recovery from a major skiing injury sustained in December 2022. He returned to domestic football in October last year and had played just two international games in 2024 before the Euros.”
Since his major tournament debut in 2010, Neuer has featured in four World Cups and four European Championships. In 2014, he was instrumental in Germany’s victorious World Cup campaign, winning the Golden Glove for the most clean sheets.
However, Germany’s recent performances in major tournaments have not been as dominant as in Neuer’s early career. The team has fallen at the group stages of the last two World Cups and reached just the round of 16 at the 2020 Euros. This makes Neuer’s consistency and longevity all the more remarkable, as he has fended off competition from Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen to retain his place as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper.
As the 2024 European Championship continues, all eyes will be on Neuer as he aims to add to his impressive tournament record and help Germany reclaim their former glory.
