Football News: Ryan Bertrand Announces Retirement
In a significant development in the world of football, former Chelsea, Southampton, and England left-back Ryan Bertrand has announced his retirement from the game. The 34-year-old, who was a product of Chelsea’s renowned youth set-up, made 57 first-team appearances for the Blues, including a memorable outing in their 2012 Champions League final victory against Bayern Munich.
Bertrand’s Impressive Career
However, it was during his time at Southampton where Bertrand truly made his mark, making a remarkable 240 appearances in all competitions for the club before moving to Leicester City in 2021. The versatile defender had also enjoyed several loan spells earlier in his career, including stints at Bournemouth, Oldham, Norwich, Reading, Nottingham Forest, and Aston Villa.
“It’s been a little while, but I get asked a lot of questions – ‘When are you coming back, what are you doing?’ So, just to make that official, I am retiring and very much looking forward to the next steps.”
Bertrand’s international career was also noteworthy, as he earned 19 senior England caps and was part of Roy Hodgson’s squad for the 2016 European Championship. Despite his move to Leicester City in 2021, multiple injury setbacks limited his playing time, and he was eventually released by the club following their relegation to the EFL Championship in 2023.
