Football News: Germany Confident Ahead of Quarter-Final Clash with Spain at Euro 2024
Ahead of the highly anticipated quarter-final clash between Germany and Spain at Euro 2024, midfielder Ilkay Gündogan has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to overcome the challenge. Speaking to the media, Gündogan believes Germany can approach the match “with a smile,” having already achieved their objectives in the tournament and shifted the mood within the country.
The 33-year-old midfielder acknowledged that the team’s focus now is on seeking perfection, with the aim of securing a spot in the semi-finals. To help them achieve this, Germany’s head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, has devised a plan to neutralize Spain’s midfield dynamo, Rodri, and handle the threat posed by the talented 16-year-old, Lamine Yamal.
Nagelsmann emphasized that Germany’s priority is on their own quality, stating, “We have a lot of quality ourselves. There are lots of ways you can face a team that likes the ball.” The coach added that while Spain’s high-pressing and transition game have improved, Germany is confident in finding a solution to the challenge.
Gündogan echoed the sentiment, saying, “We’re looking forward to it with a smile. From now on, it could be the ice on the topping, I think that’s how you say it? We have the responsibility to reach the same level or even better to have two more games to play.“
The prospect of a potential penalty shootout has also been discussed, with Gündogan emphasizing the importance of having a routine and remaining composed under pressure. The German international acknowledged that even the best players can miss penalties, but emphasized the need for “guts” to step up in crucial moments.

Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, has praised Germany’s quality, stating that the quarter-final will be a closely contested affair. He jokingly suggested tying down Toni Kroos to limit his influence, but acknowledged the depth of talent within the German squad, including the likes of Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Gündogan himself.
As the excitement builds for this highly anticipated clash, both teams will be eager to secure a place in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 and continue their quest for continental glory.
