Football News Update: Euro 2024 and Revised Goalkeeper Rules

New Goalkeeper Rules for Euro 2024

In a significant development for the football world, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the guardian of the Laws of the Game, has introduced new rules that will impact goalkeepers in upcoming competitions, including the highly anticipated Euro 2024.

According to France’s starting goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who has 19 caps for the national team, goalkeepers are now prohibited from engaging in any actions that “unfairly distract the kicker” during penalty kicks. This includes touching the posts or crossbar, a practice that was previously permissible.

Additionally, the existing requirement for goalkeepers to have “at least part of one foot touching, in line with, or behind, the goalline” when the ball is kicked remains in effect.

“These new rules are set to be enforced during the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament, where Maignan is expected to play a crucial role for France.”

The 27-year-old goalkeeper is making his first appearance in a major international competition, having taken over the starting role from long-time captain Hugo Lloris, who retired after the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Penalty Takers Granted More Flexibility

Meanwhile, penalty takers have also been granted more flexibility, as they are now allowed to feint their run-up, but cannot feint taking the kick once the run-up is complete.

France’s last-16 match at Euro 2024 is scheduled to take place in Dusseldorf on Monday, with their opponents to be determined after the conclusion of the final group stage games on Wednesday.
