Football News Update: Exciting Euro 2024 Golden Boot Race Heats Up
The iconic Henri Delaunay Trophy will be the ultimate prize at this summer’s European Championship, but individual players will also have their sights set on the coveted Golden Boot award.
Gerd Muller, Marco van Basten, Alan Shearer, and Fernando Torres are just a few of the stars who have topped the scoring charts over the years, and the race to claim the Golden Boot at Euro 2024 is shaping up to be an exciting one.
BBC Sport has assessed some of the top contenders vying for the prestigious award:
Romelu Lukaku (Belgium)
The 31-year-old striker is Belgium’s all-time top scorer with 83 goals in 114 appearances and will be looking to add to his tally at his sixth major tournament with the Red Devils. Lukaku scored 14 goals in the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, breaking the record for a single European Championship qualifying campaign.
Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)
The Liverpool forward emerged as the Netherlands’ top scorer at the 2022 World Cup, netting three goals in the group stage. The 25-year-old has nine goals in 23 international appearances and will be a key figure for the Oranje in Germany.
Gianluca Scamacca (Italy)
The 25-year-old forward has rediscovered his scoring touch since returning to Atalanta, netting 19 goals in all competitions to help the Italian side win the Europa League. Scamacca scored his first goal for Italy in their qualifying defeat by England at Wembley in October.
Robert Lewandowski (Poland)
The 35-year-old Poland captain is his country’s all-time top scorer with 82 goals in 148 appearances. Lewandowski has scored over 600 goals for club and country and will be looking to add to his tally at his sixth major international tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
The footballing superstar is showing little sign of slowing down at the age of 39. Ronaldo is international football’s all-time top scorer with 128 goals for Portugal and the record appearance maker with 206 caps. He’ll be aiming to win back-to-back Golden Boots after topping the scoring charts at Euro 2020.
