Football News Update: Huddersfield Impress in League One Opener
Huddersfield Town made a winning start to their campaign in England’s third tier, League One, following their relegation from the Championship. The Terriers secured an impressive 2-0 victory over last season’s play-off finalists, Peterborough United, in a match between two of the division’s leading promotion hopefuls.
Antony Evans and Ben Wiles scored first-half goals for the visitors, as Michael Duff’s side came out on top in the battle. Peterborough had an early scare when Ricky-Jade Jones got the better of Michal Helik in a foot race, but the shot narrowly missed the far post.
“The victory marks an impressive start for Huddersfield in their bid to secure an immediate return to the Championship, as they look to bounce back from last season’s relegation. The result will also serve as a statement of intent from Michael Duff’s side, who have demonstrated their quality and intent to challenge for promotion this season.”
The hosts, who were the top scorers in League One last season, continued to look for opportunities on the counter-attack. However, it was Huddersfield who took the lead in the 36th minute when Wiles crossed for Evans, making his competitive debut following a summer move from Bristol Rovers, to fire home from just outside the box, with the help of a sizeable deflection.
Wiles then doubled Huddersfield’s advantage just before half-time, firing a 20-yard shot through a group of players after a blocked shot had fallen to him following a corner.
Helik thought he had tapped home a third Huddersfield goal midway through the second half, but it was disallowed for offside. Despite Darren Ferguson making several substitutions in an attempt to rescue something for Peterborough, the hosts were unable to make the most of the reprieve.
