Football News Update: Klopp Rules Out Coaching USA Men’s National Team
In a surprising turn of events, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has firmly rejected the opportunity to take charge of the United States men’s national team. The USSF (United States Soccer Federation) had reportedly made an approach to the German tactician, but Klopp has categorically stated that such a move is not in his plans.
Speaking on Euro Gameday Warm-up, football pundit Simon Jordan expressed his doubts about the likelihood of Klopp managing the USA. “There’s not a parallel universe – in this life, the next life or if you’re living in The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe – where Jurgen Klopp is going to managing the USA soccer team,” Jordan stated emphatically. “It’s not going to happen.”
Jordan’s assessment echoes the sentiments of German football expert Constantin Eckner, who believes Klopp would be taking a significant pay cut if he were to accept the USA job. “I don’t believe he will be the United States national head coach though because it’s almost impossible,” Eckner said. “They introduced an equal pay policy last year and Emma Hayes – who is managing the United States women’s team – is receiving $2million a year which means that Klopp would also earn $2million per year. I don’t believe that’s an offer he will take.”
The USA is currently searching for a new head coach after the decision to sack Gregg Berhalter from his position. Berhalter led the team to a respectable performance at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, reaching the last 16, but was unable to guide them through the group stage of the Copa America, making history as the first host nation to be eliminated in the group stage.
As the USA prepares to co-host the 2026 World Cup, the USSF is reportedly eyeing a high-profile appointment, with Klopp among the names being considered. However, the ex-Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund boss, who recently took a break from football after an impressive nine-year spell at Anfield, has rebuffed the approach, seemingly content to explore other opportunities in the future.
Jordan’s assessment of the MLS (Major League Soccer) also provides an interesting perspective, as he believes the standard of the league is “poor,” with the only players of quality being the foreign imports, such as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. Despite the USA’s decent showing at the World Cup, Jordan suggests that American soccer still has a long way to go in terms of development and player quality.
As the search for the next USA men’s national team head coach continues, it appears that Jurgen Klopp will not be the one to take on the challenge, with the German tactician seemingly setting his sights on more prestigious opportunities in the future.
