Football News Update: Steve Cooper Appointed as New Leicester Manager

In a significant move, Steve Cooper has been appointed as the new manager of Leicester City on a three-year contract. The 44-year-old replaces Enzo Maresca, who departed the club earlier this month to join Chelsea.

This marks Cooper’s return to management after being sacked by Nottingham Forest, Leicester’s East Midlands rivals, back in December. During his time at Nottingham Forest, he guided the team to promotion to the Premier League in 2022, but had to navigate numerous off-field challenges before his departure with the club sitting 17th in the top flight.

Leicester City were keen on appointing Graham Potter, who they had previously targeted after parting ways with Brendan Rodgers. However, they ultimately decided to secure a deal for Cooper after Potter stalled on the move. The club also considered Carlos Corberán, who is currently under contract at West Bromwich Albion.

Cooper’s immediate objective will be to steer Leicester City away from the threat of relegation from the Premier League, having won the Championship title last season. The club faces a points deduction for breaching profitability and sustainability regulations (PSR) for the three-year period ending 2022-23, a situation that could present a significant challenge during the summer transfer window.

In recent weeks, Leicester has secured new deals for veteran striker Jamie Vardy, who turns 38 in January, and defender Jannik Vestergaard. However, the club has also seen the departures of Kelechi Iheanacho, Marc Albrighton, and Dennis Praet following the expiration of their contracts.
