Liverpool Targeting Exciting Canadian Talent Olivia Smith

In a move that could bolster their squad, Liverpool are hopeful of signing Canadian teenage sensation Olivia Smith this summer. The Reds are willing to break their club’s transfer fee record to secure the services of the 19-year-old forward or attacking midfielder.

Liverpool must pay a release clause of around €250,000 (£210,000) to break Smith’s contract with her current Portuguese club, Sporting CP. The Merseyside club has made the Canadian international their top summer target and has been engaged in positive negotiations for several months.

The Reds are confident of outmaneuvering several top clubs to land Smith’s signature and are poised to surpass their existing Women’s Super League (WSL) transfer record. Last summer, Liverpool signed striker Sophie Roman Haug from Roma for around £100,000.

Olivia Smith, who made her senior international debut for Canada at the age of 15 and was part of their Women’s World Cup squad last year, has been impressive for Sporting CP. She signed her first professional contract with the Portuguese club in 2023, joining on a three-year deal. Smith scored and assisted on her league debut and was named the Liga BPI’s Player of the Year and Young Player of the Season, having scored 13 goals in 18 appearances.

“Smith’s potential arrival at Liverpool would be considered an exciting addition as the Reds look to build on their successful 2022-23 campaign, where they finished fourth in the WSL.”

She could be the first of a few signings for Liverpool this summer, as the club has confirmed the departures of defender Emma Koivisto, midfielder Miri Taylor, and forwards Melissa Lawley and Shanice van de Sanden upon the expiry of their contracts.

Football enthusiasts will be eagerly awaiting updates on Olivia Smith’s potential move to Liverpool, as the Canadian prodigy could further strengthen the Reds’ squad and their push for glory in the upcoming competitions.
