In a statement focused on the upcoming football season, Birmingham City’s new manager John Davies expressed his commitment to assembling a squad that can succeed both in the short and long term.

“What’s important for me is that I navigate that process with the right level of calm,” said Davies. “We are being proactive and looking to get business done, to bring players in, but at the same time, we understand that it’s a process that will take time to reassemble a squad that stays with us not just for one season, but two or three.”

Davies, who was appointed after a thorough selection process involving over 40 candidates, highlighted the recent signing of goalkeeper Ryan Allsop from Hull City as an indication of the team’s playing style. “Ryan is obviously a very good goalkeeper first and foremost with his hands, but he’s exceptional with his feet, one of the best outside the Premier League,” he said. “It does give an insight into the type of football we’re going to play. We’re going to be a team that’s very progressive with the ball – we want to dominate possession and, for that, it’s critical that the goalkeeper is comfortable to execute those passes and understands how to play.”

Addressing the club’s drop to the third tier of English football, the third time in their history, Davies acknowledged that it may take time for fans to adjust. However, he emphasized his desire for an exciting brand of football. “Ultimately, what we all want is an exciting team on the pitch. I don’t want to have a sterile, slow, possession game – I want it to be exciting, fast possession that is always looking to find a pass forward to attack the opposition.”

Davies expressed his belief that the team’s playing style will ultimately resonate with the fans. “The fans will gain in belief if they see the (positive) results generated from this style of play.”

With the upcoming Euro 2024, Champions League, FIFA World Cup, Women’s World Cup, Africa Cup of Nations, Premier League, EFL Cup, EFL Championship, EFL One, EFL Two, and FA Cup on the horizon, Birmingham City fans can look forward to an exciting and progressive era under the leadership of John Davies.
