Football News Update: Newport County Striker Will Evans Poised for Move to Mansfield Town

In the latest transfer news from the world of football, Newport County striker Will Evans looks set to join newly promoted League One club Mansfield Town. Newport County are currently in negotiations with Mansfield over a fee, and it is understood that a switch is close to being finalized.

Newport County Anticipate Interest in Evans

Newport County had always anticipated interest in Evans this summer and had triggered an extension on his contract at the end of last season. The 27-year-old former farmer from Llangedwyn netted an impressive 21 goals in League Two last season, despite his club finishing in a lowly 18th position in the division.

“As early as January, then-manager Graham Coughlan confirmed that there had been approaches for the Wales C striker. Earlier this summer, Newport chairman Huw Jenkins admitted that he had had to fend off interest from two League One clubs in the talented forward.”

Evans Joins Newly Promoted Mansfield Town

Now, Evans is on the brink of moving to Nigel Clough’s Mansfield, who are back in the third tier for the first time since 2003, having finished third in League Two behind Stockport County and Wrexham. The former Cardiff Met player joined Newport from Cymru Premier League side Bala Town in May 2022.

Evans backed up his impressive league tally last season by scoring in the 4-2 FA Cup defeat to eventual winners Manchester United, finishing with a total of 25 goals in all competitions.

This move to Mansfield Town will provide Evans with the opportunity to showcase his skills in the highly competitive League One, as the club looks to make a strong push for promotion to the Championship in the upcoming 2023/24 season.
