Football News: Phil Foden Temporarily Leaves England’s Euro 2024 Camp for Family Matter
In a significant development, Manchester City star Phil Foden has temporarily departed from England’s Euro 2024 camp in Germany to return home for a “pressing family matter,” as confirmed by the Football Association (FA).
Foden, who has been a key player for Gareth Southgate’s side, has started all three of England’s group-stage matches as they progressed to the knockout stages by finishing top of Group C with five points.
“Phil Foden has temporarily left the England camp and returned to the UK for a pressing family matter,” an FA spokesperson stated.
According to the PA news agency, Foden’s partner is expecting the birth of their third child, prompting the midfielder’s temporary absence from the national team’s Spa and GolfResort Weimarer Land base.
The 23-year-old is expected to rejoin the England squad ahead of their upcoming match on Sunday, which will take place at the Veltins Arena, the same venue where they recorded their opening group-stage win over Serbia.
While Foden has looked lively at times, he has yet to truly showcase the same level of form that earned him widespread acclaim during Manchester City’s successful campaign last year. Manager Southgate has faced the challenge of striking the right balance among his wealth of attacking options, with England scoring just twice in their three outings so far in the tournament.
As England prepares for the knockout stages, the temporary loss of Foden will undoubtedly be a concern, but the team will hope to rally together and continue their push for Euro 2024 glory.
