Connected Ball Technology
One of the key innovations is the introduction of “connected ball” technology, which was successfully deployed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This system, developed by Adidas, fits the match balls with motion-sensing microchips that can track every touch at a rate of 500 times per second. This level of precision will help Video Assistant Referee (VAR) officials make more accurate and timely decisions, particularly regarding contentious calls like handballs and offside positions.
“We have the best technology available,” stated Uefa’s chief refereeing officer, Roberto Rosetti, who oversaw the Euro 2008 final, noting that the “heartbeat” data from the microchips will be made available to viewers, similar to the “snickometer” used in cricket, to provide greater clarity around critical referee calls.
Improving VAR Transparency
In addition to the advanced ball tracking, the Euro 2024 tournament will see a concerted effort to improve transparency around VAR decisions. Giant screens inside the stadiums will now offer technical explanations of VAR rulings, allowing fans and broadcasters to better understand the reasoning behind the calls.
Furthermore, Rosetti has emphasized the importance of clear dialogue between referees and team captains. During the matches, captains will be expected to keep their teammates at a distance from the referee, and yellow cards will be issued for any transgressions. The fourth officials will also be tasked with providing explanations to the team managers.
“We are doing this for football,” Rosetti said, “for the image of the game, for the next generation of young players and referees, for the image of football.”
While concerns have been raised about the potential for VAR delays, Rosetti has dismissed these, noting that the technology is not the main culprit for time-wasting in the game. Instead, the focus will be on streamlining other aspects, such as free-kick situations, throw-ins, goal kicks, and substitutions.
With these innovative measures in place, football fans can look forward to a more transparent and technologically enhanced Euro 2024 experience, which promises to raise the standard of officiating and enhance the overall enjoyment of the tournament.
