Football News Update: Netherlands Forward Joshua Zirkzee Sacrifices Disney Trip for Euro 2024 Call-Up
In a surprising turn of events, Netherlands forward Joshua Zirkzee has abandoned his planned trip to Disney World in order to join the national team’s preparations for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament. The 23-year-old had initially been left out of the 26-man squad selected by manager Ronald Koeman, but has now received a last-minute call-up following injuries to midfield duo Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners.
Zirkzee, who is yet to earn his first senior cap for the Netherlands, was enjoying a Disney World vacation when he received the news of his unexpected call-up. The Bologna forward took to social media, sharing a selfie with a huge grin and captioning it, “When you get the call to leave Disney for the Euros.” He followed up with a video showing himself leaving Disneyland and heading towards Euro 2024, writing, “Happy me pt 2.”

The young striker has been in impressive form this season, scoring 12 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions for Bologna. His performances have helped the Italian club secure a fifth-place finish in Serie A, earning them a spot in the Champions League next season. Zirkzee’s exploits have also caught the attention of Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United, who are reportedly interested in bolstering their attacking options.
Zirkzee, along with fellow last-minute call-up Ian Maatsen, will now join the Netherlands squad as they prepare for their opening Euro 2024 match against Poland on Sunday, 16 June. The Oranje will also face tournament favorites France and Austria in their group stage fixtures as they aim to advance to the knockout rounds.
