Football News Update: Mainoo in Line for First England Start at Euro 2024

Kobbie Mainoo has put himself in serious contention to make his first competitive England start against Slovakia on Sunday, talkSPORT understands.

Gareth Southgate is ready to call upon the 19-year-old Manchester United starlet to replace Conor Gallagher as Declan Rice’s midfield partner after an impressive second-half cameo in Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Slovenia in their Euro 2024 qualifier.

“I think Kobbie Mainoo will play after what he did. I think he’ll be thinking about playing,” England legend Stuart Pearce told talkSPORT.

If Mainoo does earn a starting berth, it will be England’s third different midfield combination in their four Euro 2024 games so far. The young midfielder only made his England debut after coming on to replace Gallagher in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Brazil in March.

Mainoo was a bright spark in what was a dismal goalless draw against Slovenia, as England struggled to break down their opponents’ low block and create clear-cut chances. However, Mainoo was involved in one of the Three Lions’ best opportunities, beautifully setting up fellow substitute Cole Palmer, who was unable to beat Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The inclusion of Palmer has also been discussed as a potential starting option, with the Chelsea youngster also impressing when he came on against Slovenia.

England finished top of their Euro 2024 qualifying group, avoiding the big hitters like Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal. A win against Slovakia will see Southgate’s side face the winner of the Switzerland vs. Italy last-16 tie.
