Teenager Lily Yohannes Shines in Debut as US Women’s National Team Cruises to 3-0 Victory over South Korea

In a thrilling match in Minnesota, 16-year-old Lily Yohannes made her debut for the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) and immediately made her mark, scoring just nine minutes into the game. The Ajax midfielder was introduced in the 72nd minute and wasted no time, finding the back of the net after a well-worked corner routine to seal the 3-0 victory over South Korea in a friendly encounter.

“It’s a dream come true, really,” she said. “I played this scenario out in my head like how many times before this game? Just having the idea of coming on and scoring.”

USWNT manager Emma Hayes, who recently left her position at Chelsea to take charge of the national team, praised Yohannes, saying the young midfielder “doesn’t look like a 16-year-old” and has “really pushed” her in training.

Crystal Dunn opened the scoring for the four-time Olympic champions, while Sophia Smith doubled the home side’s advantage in the 67th minute. The victory marked the second consecutive win for Hayes since she took over the USWNT.

The match came as the international football community eagerly anticipates the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament, where the top national teams in Europe will battle it out for the continental crown. In the Champions League, the world’s best club sides are gearing up for another thrilling campaign, while the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will also be on the minds of football enthusiasts around the globe.
