Football News: Euro 2024, Champions League, and More
Liverpool are set to boast a record-breaking star in their squad following the opening fixtures of Euro 2024. While players like Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Harry Kane are expected to shine in the tournament, one Anfield hero is poised to make history.
Youngest Euro 2024 Captain
Dominik Szoboszlai, the Liverpool midfielder, will become the youngest ever captain in Euros history when he leads Hungary out against Switzerland on Saturday. The 23-year-old was handed the armband by head coach Marco Rossi in November 2022 and has since guided his team to Euro 2024 qualification.
“This is a great honour for me, and I would like to thank Marco Rossi for trusting me and giving me the chance to guide the team to the European Championship,” he said.
Szoboszlai will break the record previously held by England’s Harry Kane, who was 23 years and 10 months old when he captained his country at the 2018 World Cup. The Liverpool star will take the field at 23 years, seven months, and 21 days, eclipsing the mark set by France’s Kylian Mbappe, who was named skipper at the age of 24.
Hungary’s Euro 2024 Campaign
Hungary enters the tournament in impressive form, having recently enjoyed a 14-match unbeaten run, which was ended by the Republic of Ireland in a pre-Euro 2024 friendly. However, they bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Israel last Saturday and will be looking to secure a win over Switzerland to put themselves in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages.
The Magyars’ success could see Szoboszlai come up against his Liverpool teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, should England finish second in Group C and Hungary top their group.
As the Euro 2024 action gets underway, all eyes will be on Dominik Szoboszlai as he aims to lead Hungary to glory and cement his place in the tournament’s history books.
