In a significant move for the Football world, Macclesfield FC have announced the appointment of Robbie Savage as their new Head Coach. Savage, who is a shareholder at the club, has been working as the Director of Football but will now take charge of the first team.

The decision comes after the departure of Michael Clegg, who left the club by mutual consent following their impressive run to the play-off final in the Northern Premier League. Macclesfield FC’s board was determined to keep Savage on board, having recently received interest in his services from elsewhere.

“Macclesfield FC can confirm that Robbie Savage has been appointed First Team Head Coach with immediate effect. As a result of achieving two promotions as well as reaching a play-off final and Isuzu FA Trophy semi-final within the club’s first three years, it came as no surprise when Robbie was offered a senior role elsewhere recently.”

The statement continued:

“Robbie subsequently agonised over this on numerous levels as it would have meant him relinquishing his role at Macclesfield FC โ€“ in addition to his shareholding. This was something which the board was not prepared to let happen, and it was unanimously decided that Robbie should be given the chance to prove himself here at Macclesfield FC as he launches his coaching career with us.”

As part of his backroom team, Savage has appointed former Liverpool star Emile Heskey in a position-specific role, as well as naming Peter Band as his assistant manager. Heskey, who played alongside Savage at Leicester and Birmingham, will be bringing his expertise to the Macclesfield FC setup.

Savage, who started his career with Manchester United, spent much of his playing days with Leicester, Birmingham, and Blackburn before retiring in 2013. He then embarked on a successful media career and was part of the group that created the phoenix club Macclesfield F.C in October 2020.

With Savage at the helm, Macclesfield FC will be aiming to build on their recent successes and push for further achievements in the upcoming season, as they prepare to compete in the Euro 2024 qualification rounds, the Champions League, and the FA Cup. Fans and football enthusiasts alike are eagerly anticipating Savage’s debut as Macclesfield FC’s new Head Coach.
