Football News: Scotland Ready to Make History at Euro 2024
Scotland’s football team, under the guidance of manager Steve Clarke, has turned its fortunes around and is now primed to make history at the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament in Germany this summer.
Back in 2021, Scotland were gearing up for their first major tournament appearance in a quarter of a century, fueled by excitement and a disco hit from 1977. However, their Euro 2020 campaign fell short, with a 0-0 draw against England the highlight in a largely disappointing set of results. Moreover, Covid-19 restrictions meant many Scottish fans were unable to attend the games at Hampden Park and Wembley.
Hopes and Challenges
After missing out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Tartan Army will be out in full force this summer, having breezed through the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. With high hopes of advancing to the knockout stages for the first time in a major tournament, Scotland’s preparations have faced a number of setbacks.
The injury list is a significant concern, with the loss of Serie A Midfielder of the Year Lewis Ferguson, as well as the absences of Nathan Patterson and Aaron Hickey, creating issues at right-back. Striker Lyndon Dykes and potential wildcard Ben Doak have also been forced to withdraw due to injuries.
Scotland’s recent form has also been a cause for concern, with just one win in their last nine matches since their fifth qualifying game. However, this period included challenging opponents such as England, France, and Spain, as well as losses to Northern Ireland and a failure to beat Finland in their final warm-up game.
Defying Expectations
Despite these challenges, Scotland have shown that they can defy expectations. Their road to the Euro 2024 finals has proven that the Tartan Army is capable of the unexpected. As they head to Germany, Scottish fans will be hoping that their team can finally roar their way out of the group stages and make history this summer.
