Slovenia has long been known for producing top-class goalkeepers, with names like Samir Handanovic and Jan Oblak standing out. However, the country may have finally found its next football superstar in the form of 21-year-old striker Benjamin Sesko.
Sesko, who currently plays for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, has been attracting interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs since his mid-teenage years. Matej Orazem, the sporting director at NK Domzale, the club that brought Sesko into their academy at the age of 15, believes the young forward is “destined for greatness.”
“I think that he is destined for greatness,” Orazem tells Sky Sports. “The physicality was the defining factor. He was amazing. With some young talents, you want them to play with the older guys but if they are not physically ready then you are a little more wary. With Beny, there was no doubt because of his physical presence.”
Sesko’s Journey to the Top
Sesko’s journey to the top has been a steady one, with a move to Red Bull Salzburg proving crucial in his development. From there, he made the natural progression to the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, where he has continued to impress.
In his debut Bundesliga season, Sesko showcased his rare skillset, combining the physicality of a target man with the pace and dribbling ability of a modern striker. His performances saw him linked with a move to Premier League giants Arsenal, before he opted to extend his deal with Leipzig.

With Slovenia set to compete in Euro 2024, all eyes will be on Sesko to lead the charge for his country. Orazem plans to be in Germany with his family to witness Sesko’s potential on the biggest stage, having missed out on Slovenia’s only previous appearance in the tournament 24 years ago.
“We are really happy for him and happy for everyone in Slovenia. His quality gives us a lot of hope now. Perhaps there will be a possible World Cup in the future,” Orazem adds.
