Football News Update: Trent Alexander-Arnold and the England Team Ahead of Euro 2024
As the countdown to the Euro 2024 tournament continues, former England midfielder Paul Scholes has called for Gareth Southgate to consider a tactical shift, including playing Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold in a new position.
Scholes, who won 66 caps for England, believes Alexander-Arnold’s talents would be better utilized in midfield rather than his usual defensive role. “Trent is such a gifted player, and I think he could really thrive in a midfield role for England,” Scholes noted. “His vision, passing ability, and range of distribution could be a real asset in the center of the pitch.”
The 44-year-old also urged Southgate to give younger players like Cole Palmer and Kobbie Mainoo more opportunities to shine in the England setup. “The likes of Palmer and Mainoo have shown great promise at the club level, and I think they deserve a chance to prove themselves on the international stage,” Scholes said.
Scholes’ comments come as Southgate faces mounting pressure to refresh the England squad ahead of the European Championship in Germany next year. The Three Lions’ disappointing round-of-16 exit at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has heightened the need for a tactical rethink and the integration of fresh talent.
“Gareth has done a good job, but I believe it’s time for him to be a bit more bold in his selections and tactical approach,” Scholes added. “The likes of Alexander-Arnold, Palmer, and Mainoo could bring a new dynamic to the team and help England make a real push for the trophy at Euro 2024.”
As the England camp turns its attention to the upcoming qualifiers, Scholes’ recommendations will no doubt be closely watched by Southgate and the Football Association as they seek to position the national team for success in the next major international tournament.
