In the world of football, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that young left-back Harry Amass could follow in the footsteps of Kobbie Mainoo and break into the club’s first-team squad this season. However, Ten Hag warned that the 17-year-old still has some development to do to reach the level required for the Red Devils.
With Luke Shaw’s injury history and Tyrell Malacia currently sidelined for two months due to a knee injury, the path has opened for Amass, who joined United last August from Watford. After making his Premier League debut in the 3-0 win over Everton in November, Mainoo has established himself as a first-choice player and even impressed for England at the recent Euro 2024 tournament.
“He is not that far along now [as Mainoo was] at this moment, but if we train him well, if we coach him well, then in three months it’s possible that he can be at that point. But in this moment he needs to catch up and he has to develop some of the skills needed to play for Manchester United, when we are competing for the highest position in the league.”
Amass has caught the eye during United’s pre-season tour in the United States, showcasing his physicality, technique, and attacking intent. In the 3-2 win over Real Betis, he provided the assist for Amad Diallo’s goal and delivered some crunching tackles on opponents.
The 18-year-old forward Ethan Wheatley and the 20-year-old defensive midfielder Toby Collyer are also part of United’s tour squad, and they are eager to follow in the footsteps of Mainoo and seize any opportunities that may arise due to injuries or the advancing age of players like Casemiro.
