USWNT Edge Past Brazil in Thrilling Gold Medal Match

The USWNT emerged victorious in a tightly contested gold medal match against Brazil at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Paris. Mallory Swanson’s second-half strike proved to be the decisive goal as the Americans edged past a resilient Selecao side.

Despite a dominant first-half display from Brazil, where they created numerous chances, the lack of clinical finishing proved to be their downfall. Ludmila, in particular, was left ruing missed opportunities as the match remained deadlocked.

It was the U.S. who broke the deadlock just before the hour mark, with Swanson calmly slotting home to put the reigning champions in front. Brazil coach Arthur Elias responded by introducing the legendary Marta, but the U.S. managed to hold on to their slender lead, thanks to a superb late save from goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

“The victory sees the USWNT claim their fourth consecutive Women’s World Cup title, cementing their status as the dominant force in international women’s football. For Brazil, it was a heartbreaking end to Marta’s illustrious career, as the Olympic farewell she and her nation had hoped for did not materialize.”
