Football News: Craig Bellamy Appointed as New Wales Manager, Eyes World Cup and Euro Qualifications
In a move that has football fans buzzing, Craig Bellamy has been named the new manager of the Welsh national team, signing a four-year deal. The former Wales captain is determined to banish the perception of him as a fiery and controversial figure, as he steps into his first senior management role.
Bellamy, who won 78 caps for Wales between 1998 and 2013, is well aware of the challenge ahead. “I understand the perception of me,” he said during his unveiling to the media as Rob Page’s successor. “Lack of experience and temperament were thrown at me in the past. It will be important to dismiss those concerns in three or four years’ time.”
The 44-year-old believes his coaching experience at Anderlecht and Burnley has prepared him for this opportunity with the Wales national team. His clear ambition is to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2028, after the team’s failure to reach the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.
“The path has been set for a number of years and that is what we expect now,” said Bellamy. “The FAW system is geared to qualify and to success.” His reign will begin with a Nations League tie against Euro 2024 quarter-finalists Turkey on September 6.
Bellamy’s passion for his country is undeniable, as he proudly wears a tattoo tribute to Owain Glyndwr, the last native-born Welshman to claim the title Prince of Wales. Sky Sports’ Geraint Hughes believes Bellamy’s connection to the Welsh people and language makes him the “right person for the role.”
Despite his fiery temperament as a player, Bellamy’s former teammate Robert Earnshaw believes the new Wales manager has mellowed since moving into coaching. “He’s changed a little bit and tweaked how he thinks and talks, as you have to as a manager,” Earnshaw said. “He’s going to bring that energy. There’s never going to be a dull moment with Craig.”
Bellamy’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Welsh football, as the team aims to build on its recent success in reaching the Euro 2016, Euro 2020, and 2022 World Cup. With a talented pool of young players, including Brennan Johnson, Daniel James, and Ethan Ampadu, Bellamy will be expected to guide Wales to consistent qualification for major tournaments.
As Bellamy embarks on his new journey, football fans across the world will be closely following his progress in leading the Welsh national team towards their ambitions of World Cup and European Championship glory.
