USWNT Unveils Youthful Olympic Squad for Paris 2024
In a move that signals a generational shift, USWNT head coach Emma Hayes has announced her 18-player roster for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris 2024. This squad fully embraces an emerging pool of talent, with Hayes striking a balance between experienced leaders and fresh faces.
The average age of this USWNT team is 26.8, making it the youngest Olympic roster since 2008. With an average of 58 caps per player, it’s approximately half the experience of the bronze-medal winning side from Tokyo 2020 (111 caps on average).
Notably absent from the squad is veteran striker Alex Morgan, who has been a staple of the USWNT for over a decade. However, the depth of talent in the forward line, including the likes of Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, and Jaedyn Shaw, has led to a tough selection process.
Alongside the youthful exuberance, Hayes has retained the experience of players like Lindsey Horan, Crystal Dunn, Alyssa Naeher, and Rose Lavelle, all of whom have 100 or more international appearances.
The inclusion of 20-year-old midfielder Korbin Albert has drawn some controversy, due to her past social media activity, but Hayes has emphasized the importance of “not just being tolerant and respectful” and that Albert has embraced the necessary learnings.
In terms of tactical flexibility, Hayes has prioritized versatile players who can adapt to different roles and systems, with the likes of Crystal Dunn showcasing her ability to excel in various positions.
With the Olympics just around the corner, the USWNT will be aiming to secure a fifth consecutive gold medal. However, Hayes has not only set her sights on Paris 2024 but also has an eye on the 2027 World Cup, ensuring a strong foundation for the future of the national team.
