Football News: Bolton Reach Sky Bet League One Play-off Final After Edging Past Barnsley

In a thrilling Sky Bet League One play-off semi-final, Bolton Wanderers have booked their place in the league final at Wembley after overcoming Barnsley 5-4 on aggregate.

Leading 3-1 from the First Leg

Bolton were determined to see the job through, despite a late scare from the Tykes in the second leg. The Trotters lost the second leg 3-2 at home, but it was enough to secure their spot in the final.

“It was unenjoyable! Credit to Barnsley, they were excellent and showed great character and desire. For us, it’s another learning curve,” said Bolton manager Ian Evatt.

Barnsley’s Late Comeback Effort

Barnsley striker Sam Cosgrove headed in to give the visitors hope, but goals from Aaron Collins and Eoin Toal before half-time seemingly put the game beyond reach. However, Barnsley mounted a late comeback, with strikes from Adam Phillips and a second from Cosgrove, but Bolton held on to reach Wembley.

“I’m so proud of the lads in how we performed tonight. The boys executed the game plan so I’m really proud of them,” said Barnsley interim manager Martin Devaney.

Bolton will now face either Peterborough or Oxford in the Sky Bet League One play-off final on Saturday, May 18, with the chance to secure promotion to the Championship.
